National Boat Show glides into 10th anniversary on a high note
The National Boat Show & Dive Expo continues to buck the recessionary trend, attracting more than 31 000 visitors to this year‘s three-day event at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg.
“South Africans are clearly more intent than ever on investing in their quality of life through outdoor leisure pursuits such as fishing, scuba diving, sailing and jetskiing,” says Heidi Warricker, Managing Director of expo organisers BizEvents.
“We are ecstatic that the public once again came out in huge numbers to support the show, and are looking forward to an even bigger, better, more event-packed expo next year as we celebrate NBS‘s 10th anniversary. Because Thursday, 9 August 2012 is a public holiday – National Women‘s Day – we have decided to hold a bumper four-day expo, from 9 to 12 August 2012, to toast a decade of creating watersports memories,” Warricker revealed.
Families and adventure-seekers flocked to this year‘s expo, held from 12 to 14 August 2011 and sponsored by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). Enjoying the onset of more spring-like weather and no doubt anticipating all the idyllic watersports-filled summer months that lie ahead, visitors spent an enjoyable day exploring the multifaceted array of indoor and outdoor exhibits, attractions and activities.
In addition to the many stalls selling fishing, diving and boating equipment and accessories, as well as the exotic travel destinations and fresh produce on offer, visitors had a ball wandering around the impressive display of gleaming boats of all shapes, sizes and price tags. An indoor “try dive” pool allowed would-be scuba divers the opportunity to test the waters, so to speak, while the outdoor Wake Wars wakeboarding displays attracted gasps of awe and admiration at the competitors‘ nimble tricks and flips.
Other highlights included the Rapala “Take a Kid Fishing” Workshops, the Suzuki Rockin‘ Roadshow, the Weber ® braaiing competition and the dive workshops hosted by the country‘s leading technical scuba divers. And in between all of that, visitors could relax with a frosty or a cocktail at the Peroni CafÃ© and SAB Sports Bar.
Exhibitors and visitors alike were united in their praise of this year‘s event. “Thank you for a well-run event that seemed to go like clockwork,” said Joanne Wright, Head: Brand and Marketing Communications at Zurich Insurance Company. “We received positive feedback … and have acquired some good leads.”
Commented Retief Swart, Managing Director of Aqua Divers International: “We found that we exceeded our sales from last year, which means that in the current economic environment you did a great job in getting the people with disposable funds to the show!” Andrew Bourne of Extreme Boating/Axis Wakeboard Boats added that “the National Boat Show is a great platform to show off your products”.
First-time exhibitor Liza Roberts from OverBoard Africa was pleased with her debut participation in the show, saying: “It was a great experience and the contacts we made were invaluable.”
Visitors Kobie and Michael Cochrane were bowled over by the boating displays: “We liked all the boats! This was the first time we had been to a show like this, and I really thought it was excellent, because we could compare the different boats – like the sizes, prices, etc.” Stephen Crous commented: “Impressive and always a favourite, with great bargains.”
Other visitors praised the expo for being “professional”, “awesome”, “fantastic”, “a nice outing”, “informative and interesting” and “lots of fun”, and for featuring “a variety of products”, “great bargains” and an “impressive diversity of exhibitors”.
