ZAR Entertainment is doing an urban music show on a larger scale than South Africa or Zimbabwe has witnessed before. The reason is primarily
to celebrate and mark the ZAR clubs and the ZAR brand‘s first birthday – and everyone knows that ZAR does birthdays big.
Confirmed artists on the bill are: the world‘s most celebrated and widely admired producer and rapper/singer/songwriter, Timbaland; the princess of the dance floor, Ciara; the evergreen hip-hop mainstay, Fat Joe; and Lil Kim, who is to rap music what chocolate sauce is to ice-cream. Between acts, ZARfest will feature the world‘s most awarded hip-hop DJ, who does things with spinning vinyl that shouldn‘t be possible by the conventional laws of physics – DJ Scratch‘s magician-like performing talents have to be seen to be believed. Never before has such a strong musical line-up been presented to South African and Zimbabwean fans in one show, but we wouldn‘t expect less from the Sushi King, Kenny Kunene, whose first foray this is into international music promotion. Many told him, when he just had two of the artists confirmed: “You‘re taking on something too big, too fast, are you sure it‘s going to work?”
“You‘re right,” he told them: “To be safe, let‘s add three more artists.”
Ciara and her crew start arriving on the morning of Thursday, 26 May at OR Tambo, with all artists and their crew arriving by Friday afternoon 27 May. Timbaland will be flying in on his own private jet.
The tour kicks off at the Borrowdale Race Course in Zimbabwe, Harare, on Saturday, 28 May. Kenny, who‘s a huge soccer fan, doesn‘t want anyone to miss the UEFA Champions League Final, being played between Man United and Barcelona, so the organisers have arranged for two big screens to show the game during the concert – which might have Ciara wondering if the cheers are for her or the latest goal, but as far as ZAR is concerned, the more cheers the merrier.
After the Zim concert, and a night at the Meikles Hotel, the artists will spend a few days in Durban, enjoying the warmer weather before their second show at Mr Price Kings Park Stadium on Wednesday night, 1 June. During their time in Durban a press conference will be arranged at a venue and exact date to be confirmed. The artists will, however, be staying at Sun Coast Casino.
2 June sees the party moving to Cape Town International Convention Centre – be sure to come to Cape Town ZAR after the show. The artists are booked in to the Cape Royale Hotel, where the ZAR is situated, 3 June is going to be big at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg. See you at ZAR Sandton after the show, with the artists in the Radisson BLU Gautrain Hotel, famous for hosting the world‘s first ZAR club.
We asked the artists what they thought about performing in Africa, and Lil Kim, in particular, is hugely excited, as she‘s never performed here before. The same goes for Ciara and Timbaland, who has taken time out of his busy recording schedule to do these shows. Fat Joe is no stranger to Africa and returns to wow us all once again. DJ Scratch, who puts his music ahead of anything else, will travel to the edge of the vinyl frontier. He is a special treat for anyone who knows anything about the last twenty years in hip-hop, a musical genre that has grown steadily and today totally dominates the charts.
Timbaland has, through the years, helped redefine the sound of popular music with his trademark production styles, often featuring unorthodox
arrangements, instrumentation, and sounds, tied together by a trademark sense of rhythm. Timbaland‘s production is known for playing a front line role in the songs he produces and have at times even come to be considered as overshadowing the credited performer and being the highlight of songs. Timbaland has helped to create some of the most successful songs in modern pop music, including several hit songs for Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake.
Ciara is a singer-songwriter, dancer, actress and fashion model. In 2004 Ciara released her debut album Goodies which spawned the number one hits “Goodies” and “1, 2 Step”, selling over five million copies worldwide and certified triple platinum in the United States. The album earned her four nominations at the 2004 Grammy Awards. In 2006, she released her second album, Ciara: The Evolution which debuted at number one on the illboard 200 and included the hits “Get Up” and “Promise”. Her third album Fantasy Ride released in May 2009, included the worldwide top ten hit single “Love Sex Magic” with Justin Timberlake which earned her a nomination at the 52nd Grammy Awards for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals”. Since making her musical debut in 2004, Ciara has attained five Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles including a number one. Prior to the release of her third album, Ciara has sold over seven million albums worldwide, and as of June 2010, she has sold more than 4.3 million albums and 6.9 million digital tracks in the United States alone.
Fat Joe’s first album was Represent, released in 1993, followed by Jealous One’s Envy in 1995. From 1998 to 2006, he was signed to Atlantic Records, releasing four albums under the label, Don Cartagena in 1998, Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.) in 2001, Loyalty in 2002, and All or Nothing in 2005. His most popular song in which he performed was his Remy Ma duet “Lean Back” with Terror Squad.
Lil Kim‘s career began when the Notorious B.I.G. noticed her in 1995 and she joined the the group Junior M.A.F.I.A., whose debut album Conspiracy generated three hit singles. In late 1996, her solo debut album Hard Core was released. Hard Core was certified double platinum and spawned three consecutive #1 rap hits that included: “No Time” “Not Tonight (Ladies Night remix)” and “Crush on You”, a record for a female rapper. Her following albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), both were certified platinum by the RIAA, making Kim the only female rapper besides Missy Elliot to have at least 3 platinum albums. Kim solidified her star power in 2001, when “Lady Marmalade”, a song Kim was featured on, went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That made her the first female rapper to earn a #1 on that chart. In 2005, her fourth album The Naked Truth was released, featuring her most well known song, “Lighters Up”. She continues to release singles and will have a new album out this year.
For over two decades, DJ Scratch has been everyone‘s favourite DJ. Acknowledged as one of the greatest DJs of all time and honored in The Source Magazine as a Hip Hop Icon, on July 2nd, 2010 DJ Scratch was crowned the title “Jam Master” by DMC of RUN DMC. Scratch is the man
who provided the flamboyance to EPMD, Jay Z & P Diddy’s stage shows. Throughout the years, Scratch drove audiences into frenzies with his
near-impossible visual and technical routines.
